The Newcastle International Summer Cup returns to Newcastle University’s first-class facilities for its fourth edition this weekend, as over 50 teams descend on the north-east of England for two days of exciting football action.
With squads from Scotland, England and the USA taking part, there’s plenty to celebrate as clubs prepare for the new season in style. Due to the increased number of teams, the tournament will be played across two venues for the first time: the renowned Cochrane Park and the newly added Longbenton Sports Ground, both providing top-class pitches and facilities.
The action kicks off on Saturday 27th July, with group stages where teams will compete for a place in the knockout rounds. On Sunday 28th July, the group matches will conclude before the cup and plate competitions commence, with silverware up for grabs across all age groups.
This pre-season tournament sees the return of last year’s champions, Newcastle’s Jogo Bonito (formerly, Newcastle City Sparta) and Gateshead’s Rutherford AFC, who will be looking to defend their titles.
Additionally, USA’s Hoosier FC will be making their return to the event, competing in the U10 and U12 age categories, aiming to bring home trophies after facing new competition.
Rory McBride, organiser of the Newcastle International Summer Cup, commented:
“This weekend’s Newcastle International Summer Cup is set to be our most exciting and competitive tournament yet in its fourth year at Newcastle University.
“We’re thrilled to welcome more teams than ever before and excited to introduce a second venue, Longbenton Sports Ground, with additional pitches to accommodate the growth of our event.
“At Trans World Soccer, our goal is to provide young footballers with opportunities to express themselves and grow both on and off the pitch.
“After nearly a year of preparation, we are raring to go and looking forward to seeing players, coaches, and families this weekend.”
Liam Isaac, Newcastle University’s Sports Partnership and Development Manager, added:
“We are delighted to welcome Trans World Soccer back to our facilities to host the Newcastle International Summer Cup and look forward to building on the success of previous years.
“This event is one of our largest outdoor events of the year and a key highlight in our calendar, representing a fantastic opportunity for Newcastle University to showcase our excellent sports facilities and welcome teams from the UK and overseas.
“We wish all teams the best of luck and hope you have a great weekend in Newcastle.”
We are delighted to announce that new and improved live match streaming is set to showcase 20 matches across the weekend in addition to the extensive in-event media coverage and this can be viewed for free on the Trans World Soccer YouTube channel.
The tournament will also feature football freestyle sensation John Farnworth, who will challenge players and spectators across the weekend with his skills clinic and present awards as the tournament concludes.
