The Newcastle International Summer Cup returned to Newcastle University’s state-of-the-art facilities last weekend, as over 50 grassroots clubs from Scotland, England, and the USA descended on the north-east of England for two days of exciting football action.
Marking its fourth edition, the tournament hosted teams across two venues for the first time: the renowned Cochrane Park and the newly added Longbenton Sports Ground.
The top-class facilities provided a platform for more clubs than ever before to prepare for the new season in style, with standout performances, action-packed matches, and unforgettable memories made throughout the weekend.
In the U10 category, Walker Central Whites made an impressive debut at the tournament, finishing unbeaten in the group stages. The side clinched the U10 Newcastle International Summer Cup trophy with a closely fought 2-1 victory against Central Boys Football Academy Brazil in the final.
Newcastle City Juniors delivered a dominant performance throughout the weekend, remaining unbeaten in both the group and knockout stages. They claimed the U11 Newcastle International Summer Cup trophy with a solid 2-0 victory over local rivals, Hetton Juve, in the final.
Foundation of Light U12 Reds claimed the U12 Newcastle International Summer Cup trophy after a 4-3 final against Jogo Bonito. Both teams showcased exceptional skill and effort, delivering a classic final to remember.
Following a successful outing at the UK International Cup earlier this year, Newcastle East End continued their winning form by claiming the U13 Newcastle International Summer Cup trophy after defeating Montagu & North Fenham Blues in a nail-biting 4-3 final.
Regular participants at the tournament, Rutherford AFC, showcased their class after defeating local rivals, Cramlington Juniors 4-0 to secure the U14 Newcastle International Summer Cup trophy.
In the U15 category, we witnessed a tightly contested final between Banks o’ Dee Albion from Scotland and the local side, Wallsend Yellows. The local lads claimed the Newcastle International Summer Cup trophy with a thrilling 3-2 win.
A huge well done to all clubs for their outstanding efforts on the big stage in the most competitive Newcastle International Summer Cup to date.
Off the football pitch, Sunday featured the return of world record holder and renowned professional football freestyler, John Farnworth, who demonstrated his impressive skills with players who also had the opportunity to showcase their own talents.
