UEFA Women’s EURO 2025 Preview

The wait is finally over — the continent’s best female footballers descend on Switzerland today as the UEFA Women’s European Championship 2025 kicks off. From 2 to 27 July 2025, 16 of Europe’s top national teams will battle for continental glory, with the final set to be played at the iconic St. Jakob-Park in Basel.

We take a look at the big contenders, players to watch, and what could unfold over the next few weeks.

The Favourites

England
Reigning champions England arrive in Switzerland with big expectations. After lifting the trophy in 2022 and reaching the World Cup final last year, the Lionesses are full of belief — and stacked with talent. Under Sarina Wiegman’s leadership, they’ve become a side known for resilience, fluidity, and depth. Despite a few injuries in the build-up, players like Lauren James, Georgia Stanway, and Alex Greenwood will be key as England aim to go back-to-back.

Germany
Eight-time champions Germany are always a force at the EUROs. Their physicality, organisation, and winning mentality make them serious contenders, and they’ll be eager to bounce back after a disappointing early World Cup exit in 2023. Keep an eye on midfield powerhouse Lena Oberdorf and forward Klara Bühl as they lead the charge.

France & Spain
France and Spain both bring flair, youth, and a real hunger for a first major international title. Spain’s World Cup triumph in 2023 finally turned promise into success, and with Ballon d’Or winner Aitana Bonmatí pulling the strings, they could be unstoppable if they hit their stride. France, under coach Hervé Renard, have been on the rise too and will look to go further than their semi-final finish last time out.

Underdogs to Watch

Switzerland
As hosts, Switzerland will have the full backing of the home crowd — and that could make all the difference. While they’re not among the favourites, players like Ramona Bachmann bring experience and energy that could spark an upset or two.

Denmark & Belgium
Both Denmark and Belgium are solid, well-organised teams capable of causing problems in the group stages. Don’t be surprised to see one of them push into the quarter-finals or beyond.

Players to Watch

  • Lauren James (England) – Electrifying on the ball and a constant threat.
  • Salma Paralluelo (Spain) – Rapid, powerful, and clinical — she was crucial in Spain’s World Cup run.
  • Ewa Pajor (Poland) – A prolific striker who could fire her side to a surprise result or two.
  • Delphine Cascarino (France) – Tricky and technical, she’s a nightmare for defenders.

What’s at Stake

Beyond the trophy, this tournament marks another major step forward for the women’s game. Bigger crowds, broader TV coverage, and more investment mean these players are not just role models — they’re trailblazers. Expect packed stadiums, new rivalries, and record-breaking moments throughout July.
